AIMS AND SCOPES “Journal of Tourism and Sustainability” is a journal edited by LETS – Laboratory of Ecology, Tourism and Sustainability (LETS-ISLA), publishing original research papers, reviews, technical reports, notes and comments, case studies and book reviews concerning environmental and tourism issues in a sustainable perspective, from a local to a global scale. The Journal welcomes contributions from multidisciplinary fields such as biology, geology, geography, agriculture, politics, economics, law, architecture, planning, sociology, history, tourism and sports and leisure. It aims to provide scientists, and practitioners comprehensive and applicable information, regarding tourism, carrying capacity and sustainability including: wildlife conservation and tourism interactions; sustainable landscape and urban design; environmental interpretation and education; monitoring of public awareness; inclusive tourism; assessment instruments; accreditation and certification; economical, cultural, ethical and philosophical approaches; and governance and management.
“Journal of Tourism and Sustainability” will publish two issues per year. Occasional special symposia issues will also be produced focusing on a special topic.
JOURNAL LANGUAGE
The “Journal of Tourism and Sustainability” official language is English and papers are accepted in both American and British English. Consistency throughout the paper is expected. Nevertheless submission of manuscripts in Portuguese, Spanish and or French will be accepted to be published in special issues. However, these issues will be published without any regular frequency, and should always include an extended English abstract.

SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS
All articles submitted to the journal must comply with these instructions. Failure to do so will result in the return of the manuscript and a possible delay in publication. Manuscripts should be written so that they are intelligible to the professional reader who is not a specialist in a particular field. All manuscripts are subject to copy editing. Authors must state in a cover letter that the content has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere in any language, that all authors have contributed significantly, and that all authors are in agreement with the content of the manuscript.
COPYRIGHT
Papers accepted for publication become copyright of the LETS – Laboratory of Ecology, Tourism and Sustainability (LETS-ISLA). The author(s) guarantee(s) that the manuscript will not be published elsewhere in any language without the consent of the copyright owner (LETS-ISLA – Laboratory of Ecology, Tourism and Sustainability), that the rights of third parties will not be violated, and that the publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation. Authors wishing to include figures or text passages have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.
MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION
Authors must submit their articles to “Journal of Tourism and Sustainability” by email. Electronic submission substantially reduces the editorial processing and reviewing time and shortens overall publication time. Manuscripts and cover letters must be sent to the Editor-In -Chief (jts.lets@lx.isla.pt), in a pdf format, with the following email subject: Manuscript submission – “First author’s name” (ex. Manuscript submission – Stuart et al.).
PREPARATION OF THE MANUSCRIPT
Manuscripts should be typed in double-line spacing throughout with at least 3-cm margins. The text should be Arial, font size 12 (except if required within tables where size 10 may be used). All pages should be numbered consecutively at the bottom, beginning with the title page. To facilitate the review process, please use continuous line numbers on each page.
Style
Abbreviations should be defined at first mention in the abstract and again in the main body of the text and used consistently thereafter. Upon its first use in the title, abstract, and text, the common name of a species or an infraspecific taxon should be followed by the scientific name (Genus, species; italic) in parentheses. If no common name exists in English, only the scientific name should be used.
Formulae
Standard mathematical notation should be used and Authors must adhere to SI units. Single letters that denote mathematical constants, variables, and unknown quantities should be set in italic type in text and in equations. Simple equations can be written as normal text. Use the solidus (/) instead of a horizontal line, e.g. Xp/Ym. Powers of e are often more conveniently denoted by exp. Equations appear on separate lines are numbered consecutively.
Parts of the manuscript
Manuscripts should be presented in the following order: (i) Title page, (ii) Abstract and keywords, (iii) Text, (iv) Acknowledgments, (v) References, (vi) Figure captions, (vii) Tables (each table complete with title and footnotes), and (viii) Figures. Do not number section headings or subheadings. A typical article should not exceed 7.000 words. Review papers should not exceed 10.000 words.
(i) Title page
The title page should contain:
- A concise and informative title (in bold);
- The name(s) of the author(s) (initials closed up and authors name separated by commas; e.g. R.P. White, M.C. Sousa);
- The affiliation(s) and address(es) of the author(s) (indicated by a upperscript umber);
- The e-mail address, telephone, and fax numbers of the corresponding author.
(ii) Abstract and key words
Each paper must be preceded by an abstract in English presenting the purpose of the research, the most important results, and conclusions in no more than 300 words for original and review papers or 100 words for technical reports, notes and comments. A Portuguese version (no more than 300 words) should also be provided by the authors. Authors who are unsure of correct Portuguese usage should require language editing and copyediting support to the J. Tour. Sustain.
For special issues, published in other languages than English, a 500 word abstract in English must be provided. The abstract should not contain references. The journal accepts additional abstracts in other languages of the author’s choice. Such abstracts are optional. Authors would need to supply such abstract themselves, certified that they a faithful translation of the official abstract, and they must be supplied in Unicode especial if they are using non-roman characters.
Five key words (separated by semi-column) should be supplied after the Abstract for indexing purposes.
(iii) Text
In original and review papers authors should use subheadings to divide the sections of their manuscript, if appropriate: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, and References. A combined Results and Discussion section might be appropriate. In technical reports, notes and comments, authors should defined and use subheadings to divide the sections.
(iv) Acknowledgments
These should be as brief as possible. Any grant that requires acknowledgement should be mentioned. The names of funding organizations should be written in full.
(v) References
Literature citations in the text should indicate the author’s surname with the year of publication in parentheses: (Stuart, 1992; Stuart and Carl, 1992). If there are more than two authors, only the first should be named, followed by “et al.”: Stuart et al. (1992). References at the end of the paper should be listed in alphabetical order by the first author’s surname. If there is more than one work by the same author or team of authors in the same year, a, b, etc. is added to the year, both in the text and in the list of references. Cite the names of all authors. Journal titles should be given in full.

References other than papers and books may only be cited if available for assay. Personal communications, unpublished data, and publications from informal meetings are not to be listed in the reference list but may be listed in the text (e.g. Stuart 2000, unpublished data).
Responsibility for the accuracy of bibliographic data rests entirely with the author.
(vi) Appendices
These should be placed at the end of the paper and referred to in the text. If there is more than one appendix, they should be numbered in Arabic numerals.
(vii) Tables and (viii) Figures
All tables and figures (photographs, graphs, or diagrams) should be cited in the text, and each numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals (e.g., Table 1, Fig. 1). Tables and figures should be self-contained and complement, but not duplicate, information contained in the text. They should be typed on a separate page and should have a title and a legend explaining any abbreviation used in that table or figure. In tables vertical lines should not be used to separate columns. Column headings should be brief, with units of measurement in parentheses. Footnotes to tables should be indicated by superscript lowercase letters (or asterisks for significance values and other statistical data). Statistical measures such as SD or SE should be identified in the headings. The table, its legend, and its footnotes should be understandable without reference to the text.
Figure parts should be identified by lowercase roman letters (a, b, etc.; Fig. 1a). The maximum length of each picture is 23.4 cm. Please be sure that all imported scanned material is scanned at the appropriate resolution: 1200 dpi for line art, 600 dpi for grayscale and 300 dpi for colour (TIFF - tagged image file format or EPS encapsulated PostScript).The publisher reserves the right to resize illustrations.
Figure legends must be brief, self-sufficient explanations of the illustrations. Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the paper, and numbered correspondingly. The filename for a figure should be descriptive (e.g. Figure1, Figure2a).
Figures will appear in black-and-white in the print edition of the Journal, but may appear in colour in the online edition, assuming colour originals are supplied.
PROOFS AND OFFPRINTS
Proofs
Authors should make their proof corrections on a printout of the PDF file supplied to them, checking that the text is complete and that all figures and tables are included. The author is entitled to formal corrections only. Substantial changes in content, including new results, corrected values, title, and authorship are not allowed without the approval of the responsible editor. In such cases please contact the Editor-in-Chief before returning the proofs to the publisher.
The publisher will dispose of all submitted material 2 months after publication.
Offprints
Offprints of each contribution, in a pdf format, are supplied free of charge to the authors. If you wish to order additional offprints you must return the order form with the corrected proofs.
